“Responsibility to yourself means refusing to let others do your thinking, talking, and naming for you; it means learning to respect and use your own brains and instincts; hence, grappling with hard work.”

The White Ibis is one of the most abundant and spectacular wading birds that nests in Florida. A 10-day spring tour is one of the most thrilling ways to see them and the state's other avian splendors:

http://bit.ly/SpringFlaIbisPlusTour

Florida visitors first see ibises flying in graceful white V’s. Their huge, noisy rookeries are defining visual icons of the Everglades.

They provide the fertilizer required to create and nurture vegetated islands in otherwise infertile swamps and marshes.

What do they eat? Almost anything. In Florida, the most popular menu entrees include crayfish, Sheepshead Minnows and other fish, dragonfly larvae, Apple Snails, Giant Water Bugs and other water bugs, and Mangrove Crabs.

“As their long, decurved bills might suggest, ibises eat many things that they pull out of the mud,” says the Bird Families of the World (http://bit.ly/BirdFamiliesofWorld). The ibises also catch mobile fish and prawns, but less efficiently that the related spoonbills.

With their bill tips slightly agape, White Ibises probe flooded pastures and the soft flocculent organic debris in marsh sediment. Bays, estuaries, lawns and sides of highways attract them.

(Photo: Birding Ecotours)

They dissect farm manure for horsefly larvae. Municipal sewage sludge holding areas are nice for worms and fly larvae.

Ibises rely on the seasonal, natural variation in water levels. Up to 75% of the biomass of fish concentrated in seasonally fluctuating ponds in southern Florida can be consumed in less than a week. Ibises lead the feeding frenzy by wading birds, including herons and storks.

They form strong pair bonds and nest in rookeries of up to 12,000 pairs. As testosterone permeates a rookery like a morning fog, male ibises stray from their mates. Over 50% of the attempted copulations involving 30 females under observation by one researcher involved “extra-pair” males.

However, ultimately the females control fertilization because “cloacal eversion” is probably required for successful copulation in all birds.

As you might expect, where you find an ibis rookery you will find nest predators. In some extreme cases, Fish Crows take up to 44% of all White Ibis eggs in an entire rookery.

Glossy ibis
India,Rajkot,22-08-2014.

The glossy ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) is a wading bird in the ibis family Threskiornithidae. This is the most widespread ibis species, breeding in scattered sites in warm regions of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Atlantic and Caribbean regions of the Americas. It is thought to have originated in the Old World and spread naturally from Africa to northern South America in the 19th century, from where it spread to North America. This species is migratory; most European birds winter in Africa, and in North America birds from north of the Carolinas winter farther south. Birds from other populations may disperse widely outside the breeding season. While generally declining in Europe, it has recently established a breeding colony in southern Spain, and there appears to be a growing trend for the Spanish birds to winter in Britain and Ireland, with at least 22 sightings in 2010. In 2014, a pair attempted to breed in Lincolnshire, the first such attempt in Britain
This species is a mid-sized ibis. It is 48–66 cm (19–26 in) long, averaging around 59.4 cm (23.4 in) with an 80–105 cm (31–41 in) wingspan. The culmen measures 9.7 to 14.4 cm (3.8 to 5.7 in) in length, each wing measures 24.8–30.6 cm (9.8–12.0 in), the tail is 9–11.2 cm (3.5–4.4 in) and the tarsus measures 6.8–11.3 cm (2.7–4.4 in). The body mass of this ibis can range from 485 to 970 g (1.069 to 2.138 lb). Breeding adults have reddish-brown bodies and shiny bottle-green wings. Non-breeders and juveniles have duller bodies. This species has a brownish bill, dark facial skin bordered above and below in blue-gray (non-breeding) to cobalt blue (breeding), and red-brown legs. Unlike herons, ibises fly with necks outstretched, their flight being graceful and often in V formation.
Sounds made by this rather quiet ibis include a variety of croaks and grunts, including a hoarse grrrr made when breeding. .[Wikipedia].

Did you know:
Ibis is a group of birds that has stirred human interest for ages.

According to Mediterranean legend, the Southern Bald Ibis was the first bird released by Noah after the biblical flood.

In Egyptian mythology, the man with the ibis head is the god ‘Thoth’.

The ibises are a group of long-legged wading birds in the family Threskiornithidae inhabiting wetlands, and plains and feeding usually on crustaceans.

The Northern Bald Ibis is a migratory bird which was native in Central Europe until the 17th century, before it became extinct due to the huge hunting pressure of the aristocracy. Today the Northern Bald Ibis is one of the most endangered bird species worldwide. In the context of an EU project (LIFE+ Biodiversity), with partners in Austria, Italy and Germany, the species is to be reintroduced in Europe.

I often make visits to a natural area in Port Aransas, Texas known as the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center. From the parking lot there is a paved walkway along trees, shrubs and flowers. And then you make a corner to the nice long boardwalk over the marshy area. As I made that corner, this Ibis was standing on the rail peering into the reeds and grasses. I was so pleased that it stayed long enough for me to capture several photos of it!!!

The Cream-colored Courser is at home on the oases, dunes and lush valleys of an enchanted country where the corners of two continents touch and the waters of the Mediterranean and Atlantic mix.

Morocco’s unique avian habitats are home not only to African birds, but it also is a rest stop European migrants that funnel across the Strait of Gibraltar. The courser is one of the few species that has benefited from the slow expansion of the Sahara, the world’s largest hot desert.

(Photo: Adrian Binns, Wildside Nature Tours)

The courser is a descendent of waders that now runs across the hot sand in northern Africa’s and southwest Asia’s semi-arid landscape. Their feathers? Sand-colored, of course, but with stylish black and white eye stripe accents, and a subtle, blue-grey crown on the back of the head.

Females often nest near one another, and up to 25 coursers are occasionally seen in flocks.

The courser competes for birders’ attention in Morocco with the Northern Bald Ibis, many other glamour species and the lovely Morocco landscape itself.  U.K. birders experience environmental and cultural shock after a short plane ride from London.

Birding tours in November take advantage of mildly warm and sunny weather that can sometimes require a jacket when breezes blow in from the Atlantic. Actually, Morocco’s Atlantic shore is a haven for storm-petrels, shearwaters and other seabirds.

The 9-to-11 days in the spring birding tours offered by Rockjumper, Tropical Birding, Birding Ecotours, begin in Marrakech, at the base of the Atlas Mountains.

The 18-day tours offered by Wildside Nature Tours and Field Guides start in Casablanca as does Worldwide Quest’s 12-day tour, which takes in more cultural highlights, such as a cooking class on tagine, or earthenware cooking.

The comprehensive Wildside and Field Guides tours take in a vast gorgeous expanse of Morocco’s land, wildlife and culture in big loops.

The Wildside itinerary is an arc that starts in Casablanca in the north and ends at Agadir on the Atlantic coast in the south, while the Field Guides’ itinerary is circle that begins and ends at Casablanca.

The tours use vehicles to reach hotspots where short walks and longer strolls are rewarded with views of Crimson-winged Finches and Atlas Horned Larks to Moussier’s Redstarts and Seebohm’s Wheatears.

Nature Trek’s tour starts in Marrakech, but veers farther south than some tours to Merzouga, a village in the Sahara known for huge sand dunes and camel safaris.

Experienced guides are important in Morocco; guides like Ornitholidays’ David Walsh have led 17 tours to Morocco.

The 8-day October tour offered by The Traveling Naturalist combines equal parts coastal birding with a boat trip out of Agadir, with drive past a bird-rich estuary to the arid Guelmim, “Gateway to the Desert.”

Here is a chronological listing of my top-10 birding tours in 2016 to Morocco:

• February 14, 11 days, Rockjumper Birding, $2,400, http://bit.ly/Rockjumper11da2016Morocco

• February 25, 10 days, Nature Trek, £1595 ($2,377) incl. U.K. flights http://bit.ly/NatureTrek-10da-Morocco

• March 14, 9 days, Tropical Birding, $2,900, http://bit.ly/TropicalBirdingMorocco

• March 24, 11 days, Birding Ecotours, $2,168 (€1995), http://bit.ly/BirdingEcotoursMorocco

• March 25, 18 days, Wildside Nature Tours, $5,700, http://bit.ly/WildsideMorocco

• April 5, 10 days, Ornitholidays, £1,999 ($2,979) http://bit.ly/OrnitholidaysMorocco

• April 12, 11 days, Wings Birding Tours, $3,250, http://bit.ly/WingsBirdsMorocco

• May 21, 18 days, Field Guides, $4,575, http://bit.ly/FieldGuidesMorocco

• October 14, 12 days, WorldWide Quest, $5,495, http://bit.ly/WWQuestMorocco

• October 29, 8 days, The Traveling Naturalist, £1,595 ($2,377) not flight from UK http://bit.ly/Trvl-NaturalistMorocco

I believe that the more we watch, photograph, study and enjoy Cream-colored Coursers, the better for the species, all birds, all wildlife and all humans.

Across Africa and Australia, birds are routine casualties in a chemical war against an agricultural pest that also is a huge avian food source: locusts.

Birdwatchers in Africa may see big flocks of ibis, egrets, storks and other birds on the move toward a feast of locusts. However, farmers may also be preparing to spray the locusts from the air with deadly pesticides before swarms of insects take flight to attack agricultural fields.

During one Desert Locust upsurge in northern Africa more than $200 million and “about 15 million liters of concentrated pesticide was donated,” according to the book “New Strategies in Locust Control.”

After such massive chemical campaigns, the net effect on the locusts, especially on a long-term basis, may not be assessed. In addition, often little or no assessment of the collateral damage to natural locust predators is ever conducted.

It’s a silent, massive ecological trap, a slaughter of wildlife, usually from aerial sprays of lethal chemicals.

Authorities in Africa and Australia are now focusing on more bio-friendly or less ecologically disastrous approaches to locust control. Where the impacts of birds and other natural predators of locusts have been studied, the results have been impressive.

Researchers decades ago, before massive pesticide campaigns were initiated, “reported reductions of up to 100% of hopper bands due to the activity of predators like birds, jackals, rodents, reptiles and arthropods,” wrote a scientist with Deutsche Geselischaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GTZ), a sustainable development company based in Germany.

These ground-moving locust bands contained roughly 100,000 locusts. However, in some cases, bands can grow to 700,000 or more locusts and overwhelm natural predators to eat all the locusts.

“Birds are particularly important as a natural control factor, and hoppers were sometimes reduced to 1% of the initial population,” GTZ researchers wrote in New Strategies in Locust Control.

For example, Cream-colored Coursers, Desert Sparrows and other African birds feast on Desert Locust bands in Niger, Mauritania and other West African countries eager to promote agriculture.

Hundreds of Sphecoid wasps also pursue Desert Locusts and subdue them with powerful stings. They bury their paralyzed prey in “wasp fields” that are in the paths of future locust outbreaks.

“Birds can be effective in controlling small gregarious populations but that the sheer numbers of large gregarious populations defeat them,” D.J. Greathead, a researcher at Uganda’s Institute of Biological Control, said in the Journal of Applied Ecology.

When bird and other locust predators are reduced, their ability to blunt or eliminate locust bands declines, too. However, more wildlife sanctuaries in areas known for locust outbreaks could have large positive economic impacts on wildlife and agriculture.

The Woodland Kingfisher is one of Africa’s true grasshopper specialists. Each of these blue, noisy birds can eat 26 grasshoppers a day. The Desert Locust and equally dreaded Red Locust are eaten by the kingfisher.

This highly territorial kingfisher chases raptors, hole-nesting birds and humans from its breeding territories from South Africa to sub-Saharan countries. It migrates to within 8° of the equator in the dry season, which is when locust bands routinely appear.

In Botswana, the Woodland Kingfisher is found in woodlands near water and gardens, much more often when rainfall is abundant.

Like many “tree kingfishers,” the Woodland Kingfisher seldom takes fish, but it will occasionally dive into shallow water for them. It prefers grasshoppers and locusts, and also takes beetles and cockroaches. It is known for its beautiful wing displays.

Nature’s Wonderland Safaris leads tours throughout East and South Africa to Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and other bird-rich countries in the region.

I believe that the more we watch, photograph, study and enjoy Woodland Kingfishers, the better for the species, all birds, all wildlife and all humans.

Mount Kenya National Park is one of the best of the few mountainous African habitats available to the little-known Jackson’s Francolin. It has a loud call, but is rarely seen by birders or described by ornithologists, probably because its high-altitude habitat is photographed from afar much more than actually visited.

Mount Kenya National Park has no wildebeest or cheetahs and only a few wayward Secretarybirds, but it would be an ideal setting for an animated Disney movie with a cast of intrepid bird and mammal characters from elephants and eagles to monkeys and mole-rats.

Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain, but the diverse ecological habitats of Mount Kenya at each altitude zone support a rich variety of birds, fish and mammals, including the Jackson’s Francolin.

Nature’s Wonderland Safaris, a Kenya-based guiding service, offers a guided Mount Kenya climbing trip on the Naro Moru Route, a bird-rich, spectacularly scenic adventure. The five-day trek is as challenging as it is unforgettable.

http://www.natureswonderlandsafaris.com/mt-kenya-climbing/index.html

From 2,200 to 3,700 meters (7,200-12,100 ft), the pheasant-like francolins forage in the underbrush of montane forest, bamboo and juniper forest and moorland, heath and scrub to well above treeline. It eats bulbous roots, grass, berries and insects. The handsome bird with a red bill and legs walks around mole-rat mounds up to 6 meters in diameter that are widely distributed in the park.

The francolin begins feeding before sunrise in dry weather, according to The Handbook of the Birds of the World. They pass elephants drawn to Mount Kenya to gorge on dense growths of Giant Groundsel, a type of high-altitude sunflower.

The francolins share the highest parts of Mount Kenya that still have vegetation with the Rock Hyrax, a 4-kilogram (9 lb) mammal that likes to bask in the warm morning sun, ever alert not to become the breakfast of Leopards, Verreaux's Eagles or other predators.

Lions are very sparse where temperatures can dip below freezing every night. Here, the king of the carnivores is the African Wild Dog. They hunt hoofed mammals such as Zebra.

On the lower plains near the park, ethnic groups living within sight of Mount Kenya typically build their houses with front doors facing the sacred mountain.

From an ecologist’s perspective, the 17,021-foot (5,188 m) mountain is an island. It's Kenya’s wildlife version of Noah's Ark in an area where many animals are losing to development, deforestation, agriculture and poachers’ snares that are found right up to the park’s fences. Many Black-fronted Duikers, African Buffalo and other animals at the park can’t go back.

An electric fence keeps the elephants in the park from leaving it to raid crops now growing in their ancestral feeding grounds. Mount Kenya’s fertile volcanic soil and plentiful water are a blessing to the country’s booming agricultural sector.

Of course, it’s easier for birds to come and go, and many come here. Some of the birds seen on the mountain include the Hamerkop, Open-billed Stork, White Stork, Green Ibis, African Black Duck, Maccoa Duck, Rüppell's Vulture, Lammergeier, three harriers (Eurasian Marsh, Pallid and Montagu’s), three eagles (Tawny, Steppe and Verreaux’s), three buzzards (Augur, Common and Mountain), Black Kite, Lesser Kestrel, Black-winged Plover, African Snipe, Greenshank, Green Sandpiper, Speckled Pigeon, Cape Grass Owl, Cape Eagle-owl, Montane Nightjar, three swifts (Mottled, Alpine and Scarce), Cinnamon Bracken-warbler, Slender-billed Starling, Yellow-crowned Canary, Streaky Seedeater, White-naped Raven and many others.

A primate species that is the ghost of Mount Kenya is the Sykes’ Monkey. Biologists surveying the mountain in the mid-1900s found two mummified monkeys below the Darwin Glacier. There is no easy explanation for why a monkey would climb above treeline to the retreating glacier. A mummified Colobus Monkey also was found - at 15,420 feet (4,700 m). They live at lower elevations, but not above treeline.

The East African Mole Rat is a different matter. They are supremely adapted to flourish in underground burrows on Mount Kenya up to about 3,000 meters (9,800 ft).

Truman P. Young, a Fordham University (U.S.) biologist, and Matthew R. Evans, a zoologist from the University of Cambridge (U.K.) published a detailed summary in 1993 of their observations from 1977 to 1990 of the alpine vertebrates of Mount Kenya along with previously published observations and studies of others.

I believe that the more we watch, photograph, study and enjoy the Jackson’s Francolin, the better for the species, all birds, all wildlife and humans.
