Visit the Avian Paradise of Kolleru Lake Bird Sanctuary
Kolleru Lake is a huge freshwater lake in Andhra Pradesh and just adjacent to it is the lush and spectacular Kolleru Lake Bird Sanctuary. The sanctuary is located I the deltaic region of Krishna and Godavari district, about 65 kilometres from the city of Vijayawada.
Kolleru Lake Bird Sanctuary is a paradise for nature lovers. It is home to migratory birds that fly all the way from Australia, Egypt, Siberia and the Philippines. The birds come here to nest and raise their chicks until they are strong enough to fly back. The best time to see this wide array of birds is during the winter season.
When the monsoons set in, the lake miraculously expands and spreads over an area of 260 square kilometres. Besides providing a safe haven to migratory birds, Kolleru Lake also teems with freshwater prawns and carp. The local fishermen catch the fish and crustacean which are then processed at the neighbouring village of Akividu for the market.
Kolleru Lake Bird Sanctuary is approachable from all four sides and is the perfect destination to see avian species such as the open-billed stork, painted stork, glossy ibis, teal, shoveller, red-chested podchard, a variety of fowls, Siberian crane, pintail, and grey pelican. Spread over an area of 673 square kilometres, the sanctuary is equipped with a watch tower where visitors can climb and enjoy the bounties of nature, particularly the birds.
The lush greenery and the vast expanse of the lake makes Kolleru Lake Bird Sanctuary the perfect destination to relax amidst natural beauty.
